An AmCab Bellydance Combo for “Fauq n Nahkl”
This week’s Sunday -in-the-Studio combo is to the Syrian song “Fauq n Nahkl” (also spelled Foug El Nakhel or Foug Ilna Khill). The song’s title means “Above the Palm Trees”…. or “You’ve Got A Friend Up There” – depending on how you read the title in Arabic. At least that’s what I’ve been told by Arabic speakers – which I’m not. But here’s an article that can tell you more about that peculiarity.
The version I am using in this video is by a local band, Rhythm Oasis, but it would work with other versions of the song. This one is pretty, but a bit slower. This one is more lively, with mostly vocals and drum. Many more versions are out there!
I’ve been fond of this song for ages! I first came across the melody as part of a set on a Setrak CD about 15 years ago. I asked one of the Arab regulars at my gig if he knew what the song was, and that’s when I first put a name to it. It always makes me happy to dance to it!
Want some zills with that?
In this video we’ll break down the combo and practice it with music, of course! If you are interested, you can add zills too! I have included some very fun special sounds and playing patterns to challenge you zill enthusiasts out there!
You can find the additional instruction with zills here.
