In this talk, Keti Sharif shares an intimate look into the Reda troupe’s history and legacy.  From its debut in 1959 through today, Egypt’s pioneering dance troupe has impacted not only Egyptian dance, but also belly dance genres worldwide. 

2024 marks the troupe’s 65th anniversary. Keti will share first hand information gathered from her extensive work with the Reda troupe’s original  principal dancer, Farida Fahmy, covering the founding, growth and development of the Reda troupe and its innovative and creative processes. Through her extensive work with Farida on her website,  the production of several documentaries and publication of the book, “Farida: A Memoir”, Keti offers an updated discussion on the original Reda troupe’s history – from its birth, to they way they navigated the inevitable changes over the years. Their resilience forged a new, revolutionary direction in the Egyptian dance arts, and now, with this new research, there are new insights to add to the narrative.

About Our Presenter….

Australian author of ‘Bellydance; a guide to its culture music in costume’ (Allen and Unwin), Keti Sharif spent many years living in Cairo, where she was dancing, as well as teaching Egyptian dance classes to live music in her studios in Zamalek and on the Red Sea. For 20 years she produced cultural arts festivals, events and documentaries in Egypt. For 18 years Keti has been maintaining Farida Fahmy’s official website www.faridafahmy.com, with many articles and community resources available in 13 languages. This year in 2024, Keti and Farida launched a long-awaited book titled ‘Farida; a memoir’, an important historic resource for the wider bellydance community and aficionados of the Egyptian theater. Keti continues to travel to Cairo regularly, working with live music, and teaches Somatic Bellydancing. She is the creator of A-Z Bellydance, which was initially inspired by the musical, cultural and lyrical nature of Mahmoud Reda and Farida Fahmy’s dance styles. Her website is www.a-zbellydance.com
