A Who’s Who
of Egyptian Shaabi!

o

You could say that as long as people have been making music in Egypt, there has been “shaabi” music, because “shaabi” simply means “of the people”. But in the late 1960’s, as more rural Egyptians moved to urban areas, a new kind of music emerged. It gave voice to the struggles of daily life and the economic and political frustrations of the working class people.

While the human struggles of love, money and power remain consistent over the years, musical influences and technology have changed the look and sound of Egypt’s shaabi music, spreading it to a wider audience and incorporating western influences.
