Timing Drills for Musicality Skills
To be a visual expression of the music… that is the goal of classic Middle Eastern dance. While that can sound like a nebulous concept on its surface, making it happen requires specific real skills.
One of them is being able to follow the melodic line of an instrument or vocals. And that’s the skill we’ll be working on today!
This week in the studio, we’re working on timing drills using smooth movements. Being able to match the speed of a continuous movement to a voice or instrument is one of the reals skills that carry out that lofty goal of “being the music”.
Drills like these also help you clarify and refine your movements, gaining control over each curve, lift and descent. They help your muscles and joints to develop a deep understanding of the shapes that form the foundation of this dance.
We’ll go over a few examples in 3 different timing patterns. Then try them with any other favorite smooth, continuous movements that you especially like to use!
Come to the studio with me… it’s time to dance!
Today’s drill music is “Chiftitelli with Ney” from Awzan by Souhail Kaspar
